Taylor Honey has been selling honey in Washington County since 1972

A local beekeeper continues his family tradition by involving his children in the beekeeping business.

Jared Taylor, the owner of Taylor Honey, has been a beekeeper since he was a child when he helped his own father take care of the beehives. Now Tayor has her own children who help her take the beehives north to the fields of local farmers where bees pollinate the crops.

“Since I was a kid my dad has taken me with him whether I want to go or not, like I do with my kids,” Taylor said. Taylor’s father started his beekeeping business in 1972 and they still share costs and labor equally.

Taylor Honey is a staple in the southern Utah community and works with many local farmers like Sterling’s Fruit and Vegetables. Frei’s Fruit Market and Taylor Honey have worked together since the late 90s to bring local crops and honey to St. George.

Taylor Honey also works with Stehli Farms to help educate children about bees and beekeeping.

“We have classes for 4th graders every fall at Staheli Farms for farm days and they bring every 4th grade student from Washington County to Staheli Farm and they can come and see bees, cows, sheep and they take them from the whole farming process and from where we get our food, ”Taylor said.

Instilling the importance of agricultural needs, and the role bees play in obtaining food, is the Taylor’s goal.

“I teach these kids that we can’t go picnicking with watermelon if we don’t have bees. We can’t even have chocolate milk in the morning or cereal without bees, ”Taylor said.

Many local Washington County farmers’ markets most likely have produce pollinated by Taylor bees. Local locations are in Santa Clara and Sand Hallow. However, Taylor Honey also travels from Washington County to California for farmers who want their crops to be pollinated.

“We go from Washington County to Iron County and most of our beehives are in Severe County because that’s where my roots are. We try to place our bees on our trips so that we can check out the hives, ”Taylor said.

Taylor Honey sells bulk honey to individuals but you can also find their honey at Frei’s Fruit Market in smaller quantities.
