Hathaway High School Agriculture Department Presents Beekeeping Program

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – There’s a queen in every hive, and the students of Hathaway High School are determined to find their own.

The new hive of bees was raised for free and donated to the agriculture department, starting the school’s first-ever beekeeping program.

“It sounds interesting, and it doesn’t seem like a lot of people are doing it anymore, so it’s fun to see people doing it. But I feel like every time you get into beekeeping, it’s not It’s not necessarily about the salary, it’s more about having fun at work,” said Justin Duhon, a student at Hathaway High School.

The goal of the program is to have more students interested in beekeeping careers.

Jesse Thibodeaux, professor of agricultural sciences, says the importance of bees in the world goes far beyond the production of honey.

“Bees are one of the most important insects we have. They account for most of the pollination that takes place…with agricultural crops like almonds in California, some of the local crops here or even your local vegetable garden…it’s the insects that are most responsible for its pollination and allow these crops to succeed,” Thibodeaux said.
