He enjoyed building furniture, helping renovate homes, and making wooden crafts, including bowls, pitchers, dishes, and ornaments, which he all shared with his family and friends. While walking in his fields, Don loved to pick wild flowers and made the most beautiful bouquets to take home. Don was a longtime Boy Scout and leader of Boy Scout Troop # 70.
