Clarkson declares Bee Awareness Day |

Mayor Bonnie G. Henderson issued a proclamation declaring August 21 “Honey Bee Awareness Day” as part of the Clarkson Town Commission meeting this week.

“Clarkson is a certified Bee City USA and they love their cities to recognize days like this,” said Scotty Gore, Clerk-Treasurer of Clarkson. “Plus, with the town home to the Kelley Beekeeping Company and the official Kentucky State Honey Festival, it made sense that we recognized National Bee Day every August, formerly National Bee Awareness Day.”

The proclamation said bees are essential for pollination and essential for the production of more than 90 food crops. The value of the crop can run into the billions.

“The honey bee works with the other bees in the colony as a unique and vibrant living organism that helps maintain healthy ecosystems,” the proclamation said.

The commission also approved the purchase of 12 new 30-inch by 6-inch Honeyfest banners for downtown telephone poles to hang each year for Honeyfest.

“They will be hung with the Honeyfest flags and other decorations that we have every year,” Gore said. “The cost of the 12 banners and stands will be $ 2,100 plus shipping and will be purchased from Temple Display. “

At Monday’s meeting, the committee also revised the paragraph on adoption leave in the city’s personnel policy.

The existing paragraph on adoption leave reflected state law, which was amended with the 2021 General Assembly which passed House Bill 210. Gore said the commission’s municipal bylaw aligns city policy with the revised new state law.

The main change, he said, was eligibility for adoption leave for parents adopting children 7 and under and children 10 and under.

Brad Travis of Buckles, Travis & Hart, PLLC, and Cristi Brooks of Drane & Company, LLC, spoke with the commission about the possibility of conducting the city’s audit for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Written proposals are in preparation.

An update on the city clean-up of the old Renfro property attached to the municipal park was given during the meeting.

“The city took possession of the Renfro property almost two years ago,” said Gore. “The cleanup of the property is almost complete and consisted of demolishing an old house and garage, chopping down trees, cleaning up large piles of garbage, leveling the ground, improving the drainage of the property. “

It will provide additional parking for the municipal park and the future home of the Clarkson Veterans Memorial in Leitchfield VFW.

The town has also discussed other possible future uses for other parts of the property, possibly including a pavilion, playground and playground, however, these are just a few rough ideas for the ‘future,’ Gore said. “No decision has yet been made for the property other than the parking lot and the veterans memorial.”
