Show Me the Honey, by Tracy Beckerman https://xovenagricultor.org/show-me-the-honey-by-tracy-beckerman/ Mon, 06 Jun 2022 22:34:30 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/show-me-the-honey-by-tracy-beckerman/

The first time I felt the wasp buzz near my ear, I didn’t really notice it. I was engrossed in a book and just pushed the wasp away without looking. But the second time it got that close, I felt like a fighter jet was performing flight maneuvers around my head, and I was pretty sure the wasp was thinking I was behind enemy lines. The third time he dive-bombed me, I dropped the book and ran out of my deck chair screaming like a little girl. When I thought the coast was clear, I ran for my book, and that’s when I saw it: a giant wasp’s nest. I don’t know how I hadn’t noticed it before. It was the size of a small planet, or at least as big as my fist, hanging directly under the bottom of the deck railing next to my lounge chair. As if the sheer size of the nest wasn’t enough to grab my attention, it was also buzzing as wasp after wasp emerged from a lonely hole and then flew off to search for other innocent suburban housewives in upset.

I should mention that when it comes to flying and stinging insects, I distinguish between the good kind (bees) and the bad (murder hornets), terrorist suburban wasps falling somewhere closer to hornets murderers in terms of my feelings of affection for them. I’ll leave the bees but when it comes to wasps I’m firmly on the “I was here first and this bridge isn’t big enough for both of us” camp. So when I saw the nest, I knew what to do.

Although we have a pest control company to deal with such things, I decided that even though the nest was the size of Jupiter, it was still within my ability to grab a nearby stick and bring down the nest of his mount and cast him into oblivion.

Of course, it’s the kind of bad choice that causes people to wake up from comas 20 years later and say, “Well, doctor, the last thing I remember is throwing a little wasp’s nest in oblivion.”

As I was looking for the best stick to use to launch the nest, my daughter-in-law appeared on the bridge.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m looking for a stick to kick this wasp’s nest,” I told him, pointing to the Jupiter-sized nest I had discovered.

“Oh, you don’t need a stick,” she said. Then she walked away and struck the nest with the palm of her hand.

I watched with a mixture of admiration and horror and waited for the nest to fade into oblivion. But he did not sail. He didn’t steal. He didn’t even fall. He shook violently then stopped.

I turned to my daughter-in-law. “Well, that didn’t work out,” I said. “Now what?”

Suddenly the whole nest started buzzing and as we looked down we saw a very big angry looking wasp starting to emerge.

She nodded neutrally.

“To run!”

Mama June fans slam the star as she praises husband Justin Stroud after losing custody of daughter Honey Boo Boo, 16 https://xovenagricultor.org/mama-june-fans-slam-the-star-as-she-praises-husband-justin-stroud-after-losing-custody-of-daughter-honey-boo-boo-16/ Sun, 05 Jun 2022 03:54:00 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/mama-june-fans-slam-the-star-as-she-praises-husband-justin-stroud-after-losing-custody-of-daughter-honey-boo-boo-16/

MAMA June Shannon has been slammed by fans for gushing over her new husband Justin Stroud, just days after losing custody of her daughter, Honey Boo Boo.

The Mama June: Road to Redemption star, 42, and her new man, 34, quietly tied the knot in a Georgia courthouse on March 23, after just a few months of dating.

But it wasn’t until earlier this week that the reality star revealed on Instagram that she and her new boyfriend “are officially off the market!”

Meanwhile, The Sun also learned that 22-year-old daughter Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon has officially been awarded full custody of her sister, 16-year-old Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, in a new court ruling. .

But on Instagram, June showered her new hubby with love and gratitude, not even mentioning the drama within her family.

Alongside a rotating montage of photos, June posted a lengthy love letter to Justin, saying he had it all along.

“Yes, I was scared at first. Yes, I was. But you showed what true love really is – to feel love for the first time in 41 years.

“You’re so awesome, so caring, so loving, and put up with all my bullshit and awkwardness.

“And even when I get on your nerves, you still love me through it all.

“In less than a year, we’ve been through a lot. But you know what, we made it TOGETHER.

“Even when the people in our life didn’t want us to be together, we stayed strong TOGETHER.”

Fans online slammed the rant and fired the newlywed for ignoring her lost daughter.

As one fan replied, “You need help. Stay away from drug addicts. Your kids should always come first.”

Another tagged: “Girl you just lost custody of your child and this is what you post?”

While a third asked: ‘Why can’t you try so hard for your children?’

Some comments were also directed at her new husband.

“He’s just with her to raise the fame,” one person commented. “He’s going to get where he wants and drop her too.”

While another agreed: “When his $$ dries up, I bet he says goodbye.”

Still, some fans were tugging for Mama: “I wish June the best – but her priorities are scrambled,” one fan commented. “I want us all to be happy…but, June thought…”I’m going to fly by the seat of my pants.

“I just pray that she doesn’t relapse.”

June’s battle with drugs spiraled out of control and came to a head when she was arrested for drug possession in March 2019 along with her then-boyfriend, 46-year-old Geno Doak.

Pumpkin was granted temporary guardianship of Alana in August 2019, courtesy of Alana’s father, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson.

In her drug addiction, June sold the family’s Georgia home at a loss for quick cash in October 2019.

June now claims to have been sober for almost two years, but in the final order issued in April 2022, the judge wrote that Pumpkin “had guardianship of the minor child since April 29, 2019.

“It is in the best interests of the child that the plaintiff be granted sole custody.”

The judge ordered June to pay Pumpkin $800 in monthly child support, beginning May 1, 2022, and continuing on the 1st of each month until Alana turns 18.

Pumpkin now has the right to make decisions about Alana’s day-to-day care, and she also has exclusive decision-making authority for major decisions.

She and her husband Josh Efird also have their hands full now, not only looking after their son Bentley, daughters Ella and Alana and their newborn twins.

Scientists develop honey bee DNA test to monitor hive health https://xovenagricultor.org/scientists-develop-honey-bee-dna-test-to-monitor-hive-health/ Tue, 31 May 2022 22:35:59 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/scientists-develop-honey-bee-dna-test-to-monitor-hive-health/

Scientists have developed an innovative method to examine traces of DNA in honey, which can aid in the early identification of health problems in a hive when a deadly new variant of the disease spreads through populations world.

The new test could help identify potential diseases like the latest variant of the deformed wing virus that threatens bees, as well as map their interaction with other species and local botanical diversity.

Researchers at the Alexander Fleming Biomedical Sciences Research Center (BSRC) in Vari, Greece, have invented a system called “direct metagenomics” that allows them to identify DNA fragments found in honey.

Illustrative image: Bee collecting pollen and carrying it in its pollen basket.
Yannis Varouhakis, instagram.com/varouhakis/Zenger

The scientists point out that their innovation avoids sacrificing the insect in the process of learning more about potentially dangerous viruses and diseases.

Bees produce honey by regurgitating nectar and pollen from the flowers they forage. Then they place it in the cells of their hive until enough water evaporates.

During this procedure, the honey comes into contact with a variety of organisms. Therefore, it contains DNA from several species, also called environmental DNA (eDNA).

This type of DNA comes from foraging plants, bee gut bacteria, and potential hive pathogens such as the varroa mite.

BSRC Alexander Fleming scientists analyzed several samples of honey from a bee hive in a typical Mediterranean landscape. They identified more than 40 species of plants which reflect all the botanical diversity surrounding hives.

Study author Anastasios Galanis pointed out that a better understanding of the interactions of bees with other species would help identify periods and areas at risk for bees.

Galanis said: “This is extremely important in rural and agricultural environments where species interactions influence crop productivity.”

The scientist pointed out that the production of a large part of our daily food depends on the activity of the bees and the state of their environment.

The BSRC researchers were able to monitor the variability in bee diet throughout the year. Their new method also allowed them to determine the microbiota of bees in a non-invasive way. In addition, scientists have been able to identify pathogenic species such as varroa.

The Greek study is still at an exploratory stage. However, the BSRC team of scientists believe this type of examination could eventually be used to monitor and anticipate diseases and pathogens in large-scale studies.

Study leader Dr Solenn Patalano said: “Like the human gut microbiome, the bee gut microbiome is an important part of their health.

“We already know that environmental stressors, such as pesticides, can severely damage gut microbial communities and increase bee disease risk. But how this works remains largely unknown.”

Patalano said their new procedure would allow the study of gut microbiome variation without having to sacrifice bees.

She pointed out: “If we want to ensure ecosystem services such as the pollination of fruits and vegetables while maintaining the biodiversity of species, we must also preserve the health of bees.

“Our challenge is to build biomonitoring strategies to identify the most appropriate ecological niches for all pollinators.”

Bees are social flying insects known for their construction of perennial colonial nests from wax, the large size of their colonies, and the excess production and storage of honey.

Varroa mite, excessive use of insecticides, construction projects and monoculture are considered the main threats to the existence of honey bees.

The BSRC study follows a warning from a leading scientist about a potential global threat to bees.

Professor Robert Paxton of Martin Luther University in the German city of Halle, Lower Saxony, said the latest variant of the deformed wing virus has the potential to wipe out bee populations all over the world .

Paxton called the virus “the biggest threat to bees right now.”

The virus variant is spread by varroa mites. It causes severe damage to the wings of insects before killing them.

The BSRC Alexander Fleming is a not-for-profit biomedical research organization.

Founded in 1998, it is named after Scottish microbiologist Sir Alexander Fleming (1881–1955) and his widow, Greek-born doctor and human rights activist Amalia Lady Fleming (1912–1986).

‘Goa’s Multi-Floral Tree Plants Give Honey a Unique Taste’ | Goa News https://xovenagricultor.org/goas-multi-floral-tree-plants-give-honey-a-unique-taste-goa-news/ Sun, 29 May 2022 23:14:00 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/goas-multi-floral-tree-plants-give-honey-a-unique-taste-goa-news/ Panaji: Goa is known for its multi-floral tree vegetation which produces rare nectar. This is assimilated by the bees, resulting in the production of honey with a unique taste, said famous beekeeper P Shaliyo.
He was interacting with 21 participants from various parts of the state who participated in his beekeeping training program held recently at the Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute in Quepem.
While sharing his knowledge and experience on the subject, Shaliyo introduced the participants to the basics of bee biology and the management of the colony of bees of the Apis Cerana Indica race.
Shaliyo gave participants a hands-on demonstration in the institute’s apiary, which contains live hive colonies. Some of the participants also handled the combs with live bees, which changed their view of bee behavior.
“The role of bees in boosting agricultural and horticultural production cannot be underestimated. Due to the research carried out in recent years and the resulting awareness, a significant number of people across Goa have attended beekeeping training programs, which take place almost twice a month at the institute,” said the director of the institute, Father Michael D’Costa.
D’Costa further informed attendees of the various government programs available that offer a subsidy for the purchase of hive colonies. He also explained the procedure for making the request.
Detailed information on beekeeping training and post-training support can be obtained from Don Bosco’s VTI office on 7498689248. Interested participants can also email donboscovti.quepem@gmail.com for necessary details. ]]>
Dom’s Creamery opens in Avon with unique ice cream flavors like Charcoal, Honey Latte, Fig Parmesan – Hartford Courant https://xovenagricultor.org/doms-creamery-opens-in-avon-with-unique-ice-cream-flavors-like-charcoal-honey-latte-fig-parmesan-hartford-courant/ Fri, 27 May 2022 19:17:33 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/doms-creamery-opens-in-avon-with-unique-ice-cream-flavors-like-charcoal-honey-latte-fig-parmesan-hartford-courant/

Seven years after opening Dom’s Coffee on Main Street in Avon, Asta Plankiene and her husband, Andrius Plankis, are taking their flavors in a new direction with the opening of Dom’s Creamery, an upscale ice cream shop next door to Dom’s Coffee .

The Avon couple, who attended the Scoop School in Missouri, make their own ice cream. Their flavors go where few ice cream parlors go. During the soft opening on Wednesday, the most popular flavor was charcoal. “It’s activated charcoal, with a sweet taste,” Plankis said.

The pair also make a rich and uniquely textured Fig and Parmesan Ice Cream made with premium Reggiano, dairy-free oat-cinnamon milk, intensely peanuty PBJ, sweet potato-based ‘Ube’ violet, a vanilla with just a touch of lavender and a honey latte.

“Honey latte is a very popular drink in our cafe,” Plankiene said. “A lot of our flavors come from the beverages in our cafe.”

They also have a traditional range: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, banana, berry sorbet, mint chocolate chips, pistachio.

Unlike many mint chocolate chips, the ice cream is not green, but contains green splotches of mint leaves. The pistachio does not look like an ordinary pistachio. Banana ice cream is not yellow. “Everything is natural. No dyes,” Plankis said.

They originally planned to open the creamery last summer. “A lot has happened. It was hard to get things, to get people. The supply chain. Everything took forever. You had no choice, and no one cared if you were around crying,” Plankis said.

Plankiene added, “We wanted it to look super nice, so we were okay with not opening until we really felt it was ready to go,” she said.

The shop’s interior is cheerful and bright, with pastel green benches that look like a gentle swirl, clusters of multicolored balloons, and a mural by abstract artist Alex Proba. The boutique has an upstairs function room for parties and meetings.

A glazed terrace faces Route 44. “We love this room so much. People will drive by and see people eating ice cream and want to come in too,” Plankiene said.

In addition to ice cream — $5.50 a scoop, $6.50 for two, $7.50 for three, in boutique-made cones — Dom’s sells a lovely little flight of ice cream, a tasting platter of six flavors, for $10. The soft serve, available in vanilla, chocolate, and swirl, is $4.

Milkshakes ($9), espresso milkshakes ($10), cold brew floats ($8.50), and coffees are on the menu. The pancakes ($12 to $14) and Belgian waffles in syrup and powdered sugar ($8) are made by Plankis’ mother, Gitana Plankiene. Pancakes come in breakfast varieties, salmon, ham, pesto-mozzarella, vanilla ice cream, berries, Nutella, figs, and cream cheese.

Cookies for ice cream sandwiches are made by Lyubov Davydova, who also cooks for Dom’s Coffee. The ice cream is available in pints and popsicles. Peanut butter or vanilla ice cream for dogs comes in a cute paw-shaped popsicle. Dogs are welcome outside only.

Dom’s Creamery, at 16 West Main St. in Avon, will be open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. facebook.com/domscreameryct.

PRI Makes Progress Toward Clearer Transparency of Manuka Honey Labeling and Testing with a Whole New Look | News https://xovenagricultor.org/pri-makes-progress-toward-clearer-transparency-of-manuka-honey-labeling-and-testing-with-a-whole-new-look-news/ Wed, 25 May 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/pri-makes-progress-toward-clearer-transparency-of-manuka-honey-labeling-and-testing-with-a-whole-new-look-news/

PRI believes making a purchase shouldn’t require hours of research. To this end, the PRI team has long been in discussion to find the best way to label their manuka honey highlights in a clear and transparent manner.

CARPINTERIA, Calif., May 25, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Customers don’t have to spend hours researching everything. After months of deliberation and gathering feedback from loyal customers, PRI is thrilled to announce that it is moving to a quick and easy rating system that will help customers understand their honey at a glance.

In June 2022PRI will be switching to a uniquely numbered MGO on the label and a scannable QR code (for those looking for all the juicy details about what’s in their jar.)

“We believe that making a purchase shouldn’t require hours of research! To that end, the PRI team has long been in discussion to find the best way to label our manuka honey highlights in a clear and transparent manner. As the original importer of Manuka Honey in the United States, we used the standard rating systems originally used by all, to differentiate Manuka strengths.

However, over the years our understanding of what makes manuka honey unique has grown significantly, and testing and regulations have evolved alongside this knowledge. MGO has now become a worldwide standard for labeling the strengths of manuka honey. Our first step was to introduce the MGO level on our labels, placing it next to our original grading numbers. We hoped this would help customers with the transition and be able to easily compare our Manuka to that of the new Manuka companies that have sprung up over the past few years. Over the past 6 months, we have gathered feedback from our customers and other experts in the field, and have decided to re-launch our Manuka range with just one number – MGO. Additionally, we give our customers a way to easily access test results for every batch of manuka honey we sell via a QR code* directly on the label. Just scan the code with your phone for all the details about your darling!”

Despite honey money, Nigeria’s production declines https://xovenagricultor.org/despite-honey-money-nigerias-production-declines/ Sun, 22 May 2022 04:15:36 +0000 https://xovenagricultor.org/despite-honey-money-nigerias-production-declines/

Last Friday, beekeepers celebrated World Bee Day with a reflection on the many challenges facing potentials in the honey value chain in Nigeria.

Currently, a liter of honey in Nigeria sells for between 3,000 and 4,000 Naira, while a liter of gasoline (premium motor gasoline) sells for 165 Naira. Even if the subsidy is removed, it will not be valued at the current price of honey.

According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country consumes about 400,000 tonnes of honey per year, but produces less than 40,000 tonnes, or 10% of consumption.

Importing 360,000 metric tons of honey represents an import bill of over 838 billion naira, or about $2 billion per year.

In fact, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) claims that the lack of adequate honey production in the country costs the economy more than $10 billion a year.

The NEPC noted that Nigeria was capable of generating at least $10 billion a year from trade in honey and other bee products if there was an improvement in quality compliance with safety standards. food and the achievement of the 3rd country list certification to facilitate market access.

Alhaji Idris Muhammad Barau, Project Manager of the Beekeeping Extension Society and First Vice President of the Federation of Beekeepers Associations of Nigeria, a founding member of the West African Beekeepers Network, said that despite the potential for industry, the government seemed to show little interest in beekeeping.

“The main problems faced by beekeepers are limited capital, hive vandalism, bush burning and insecurity. For capital, we seek subsidies and also use the natural raw materials available in hive constructions. But the remaining challenges are supposed to be checked by the government,” the Kaduna-based farmer said.

Alhaji Idris, who is an advanced beekeeping trainer for Bees Abroad UK Charity and holds an African Beekeeping Proficiency Certificate in West Africa, is extending modern beekeeping technology to local farmers.

“We also taught farmers how to use locally available materials, such as corn stalks, to make beehives. It helps get them going; and with the little harvest they make, they will gradually enter modern hives.

“Agricultural side extension agents, we engage them in training as volunteers who then extend the technology to their farmers. Thanks to this approach, we were able to have a network of more than 4,000 beekeepers,” he said.

The farmer has been in beekeeping and extension as a volunteer for over 20 years. He said that on average he produced about 800 liters while his network members produced an average of 12,000 to 15,000 liters.

“I have devoted my whole life to beekeeping. It started as a passion but grew into a business, trainer and consultant which led me to train beekeepers in Ghana, Cameroon, Liberia and Sudan except Nigeria,” he said. he declares.

He added that he does extra feed for his bees when the supply of nectar and pollen is low.

Another beekeeper from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Oreyemi Babatunde Adenola, who has been in the business for 21 years, also shared his experience.

“When my mother and her group started beekeeping in Ijebu Ode, only a very few people understood what was going on. In a village where I installed my apiary, the villagers thought that the hives were coffins for burying small children. However, it is a great joy to know that awareness is everywhere and people are asking how to start every day,” he said.

Mr Adenola, who is a member of Nigeria Beekeepers Network, and Gateway Apic Association, Ogun State, West Africa Beekeepers, said they have created a situation where many are getting into beekeeping.

The farmer said that the current problem that is rocking the foundations of beekeeping is the act of vandalism on apiaries. “In some areas, they harvest honey. In some they steal the hives with bees or empty hives, and finally in other apiaries they leave with the iron stand.

“We were able to identify these areas and encouraged farmers to move. We also target honey hunters for modern beekeeping training. If they understand the concept of modern beekeeping techniques, they can adopt it.

“We are also considering adopting the use of chains to protect the hive box/roof, as well as the stand. Therefore, it will not be easy with the chain to steal or open the hives,” he said.

Pastor Gideon Dagunduro, who heads the Anagada Farmers’ Cooperative in Abuja, told the Daily Trust on Sunday that honey production, like other agricultural ventures, is facing funding challenges, adding that the fact that ” most apiaries are attacked by the shepherds” makes the task even more difficult.

He also listed other challenges including outdated equipment, weak government involvement and lack of private partnership in beekeeping as is the case in other agricultural sub-sectors.
