The allure of college football is stronger than ever, with massive paychecks and program control tempting even the most seasoned NFL head coaches. But there's a catch! The changing landscape of college football, fueled by Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal, is making it increasingly difficult for NFL coaches to make the leap.
Consider Lane Kiffin, the former Raiders coach, now climbing the college ranks and potentially earning a minimum of $13 million annually. This kind of opportunity is definitely turning heads in the NFL. But here's where it gets complicated: major college programs with coaching vacancies can't afford to wait for an NFL coach's season to end. They need to act fast.
Take Nick Saban's infamous departure from the Miami Dolphins nearly two decades ago. He waited until his season concluded before heading to Alabama. Similarly, Bobby Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons mid-season to take the Arkansas job.
The ability to jump ship depends on the coach's contract. Some, like Saban's, have clauses allowing a return to college whenever they choose. But who would abandon their NFL team before the season's over? While NFL teams fire coaches during the season, it's almost unheard of for a successful coach to pack up and leave mid-season.
The core issue? Time. College programs need to fill vacancies quickly. Transfer portals open, and fundraising efforts begin. They can't afford to wait until January.
Take Penn State, for example. After missing out on BYU's Kalani Sitake, they might consider an NFL coach. If the Baltimore Ravens don't make the playoffs, John Harbaugh could be a great fit. However, he's been with the Ravens since 2008, so is he ready to move on?
And let's not forget Mike Tomlin, who has made it clear he's not interested in college football, famously saying "never say never, but never" when asked about the USC job in 2021.
The NFL coaching carousel is about to spin into high gear. But college programs will likely want to fill vacancies long before a current NFL head coach could realistically depart.
This makes it incredibly challenging for NFL coaches to seize the financial rewards and control offered by college programs.
