For years, New York held the top spot, but the latest rankings show Chicago's lost-time increasing by 10 hours, pushing it into the lead. But here's where it gets controversial... Globally, Chicago's traffic woes pale in comparison to cities like Istanbul and Mexico City. New York and Philadelphia complete the top five.
So, what's contributing to Chicago's gridlock? A significant factor is the city's notoriously congested highways. Inrix's data reveals some particularly problematic stretches. For example, the outbound Stevenson Expressway between the Dan Ryan Expressway and Cicero Avenue is the fifth most congested highway in the U.S., costing drivers roughly 79 hours a year. The Kennedy Expressway also makes a strong showing, with two sections ranking at numbers 6 and 7. The inbound Eisenhower Expressway and the outbound Kennedy Expressway also made the top 10.
