Casas, a prominent figure in American swimming, was scheduled to compete in the 200 IM, but he was a no-show. This happened at the Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas. While the reason for his absence remains undisclosed, it immediately sparked curiosity among swimming enthusiasts.
For context, Casas holds a remarkable record in this event. He is the 4th fastest performer in history, clocking an impressive 1:54.30 to secure a silver medal at the 2025 World Championships. This makes his absence even more surprising.
In the heats, his training partner, Carson Foster, was the fastest swimmer, with a time of 2:01.38. Furthermore, the world record holder, Leon Marchand, also a Texas post-grad trainee, qualified 5th with a time of 2:05.95. It's interesting to note that the last time Marchand swam a 200 IM as slow as this was at a small local meet in France back in March 2020, just before the world was shut down by COVID-19. He swam a 2:07.81 in the prelims – the fastest time of the day – before scratching the final. At that time, he was only 17 years old.
But here's where it gets controversial... Casas's withdrawal from the 200 IM doesn't necessarily mean he's out of the competition. At the U.S. Open in December, he participated in the 50 backstroke, 100 fly, and 200 freestyle. So, his fans are still hopeful to see him compete in the remaining events.
Casas has four more events to look forward to: the 100 fly (seeded 3rd), 200 free (seeded 9th), 50 back (seeded 1st), and 100 free (seeded 6th). The 50 backstroke, where he's the top seed, is one of the races with double prize money, with the winner potentially earning $3,000.
And this is the part most people miss... The absence of such a high-profile athlete naturally raises questions. Was it a strategic decision? An unforeseen health issue? Or something else entirely? Without an official statement, speculation runs rampant.
