The Phillies' rotation is facing a challenging situation as they aim for their third consecutive NL East title. With star pitcher Zack Wheeler's uncertain status for Opening Day due to thoracic outlet surgery, the team is in a tricky spot. This surgery, which ended Wheeler's 2025 season, typically requires a lengthy recovery of six to eight months, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2026 season.
As spring training begins, manager Rob Thomson has provided a vague timeline for Wheeler's return, stating that he might not be ready for the season opener but should be back soon after. The 35-year-old right-hander is currently throwing from flat ground and doing well, but the Phillies are taking a cautious approach with their three-time All-Star.
The situation is further complicated by the departure of Ranger Suárez via free agency, leaving the starting staff thinner than usual. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has acknowledged the need to deepen the rotation, stating that their scouts will focus on finding starting pitching depth throughout the spring.
However, the Phillies are unlikely to pursue big-name free agents like Zac Gallen, Lucas Giolito, or Chris Bassitt. Their offseason moves, including re-signing Kyle Schwarber and signing Adolis García and Brad Keller, suggest that their focus is on retaining key players rather than making significant additions.
There are some free agents available, such as Jose Quintana and Aaron Civale, but Dombrowski hinted at the possibility of trade opportunities. He suggested that the slow-moving free agent market for starting pitching could make some fringe arms available via trade. However, this strategy carries risks, as teams often lose pitchers to injuries during spring training.
Assuming Wheeler starts the season on the injured list, Cristopher Sánchez, the Cy Young runner-up, is expected to get the Opening Day start. He will be followed by Jesús Luzardo and Aaron Nola in the rotation, with Taijuan Walker also likely to secure a spot.
The fifth spot in the rotation is up for grabs, and top prospect Andrew Painter has a legitimate chance to win the job. Painter, who was once considered the top pitching prospect in the sport, has faced some setbacks due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the 2023-24 seasons.
His performance at Triple-A Lehigh Valley last year was mixed, with a 5.40 ERA and a solid but not elite 23.4% strikeout rate over 22 starts. While his raw stuff remains impressive, with an average four-seam fastball speed of nearly 97 mph, he has shown susceptibility to home runs.
Painter is one of the better pitching prospects in MLB and is considered one of Philly's top minor league talents alongside shortstop Aidan Miller and outfielder Justin Crawford. If Painter struggles during spring training, the Phils have the option to send him back to Lehigh Valley, but they currently lack viable alternatives to fill the rotation until Wheeler's return.
The other starters on the 40-man roster, such as Jean Cabrera, Yoniel Curet, and Alan Rangel, have little to no MLB experience. Non-roster invitees Tucker Davidson and Bryse Wilson are not seen as reliable options. Keller, who has starting experience, was signed as a high-leverage reliever.
The Phillies are right to give Painter a chance to win the job, especially if Wheeler is expected back within the first few weeks of the regular season. However, with Nola coming off a bad season and Walker's inconsistent performance in Philly, the rotation could be vulnerable to further injuries. Wheeler's return is not guaranteed, and adding rotation depth is crucial to ensure the team's success.
