DIY Eyelash Glue

For falsie lovers all over the globe, lash glue is a necessity. Eyelash glue keeps your eyelashes from moving around and falling off.

Hopefully!

But having eyelash adhesives on hand for every time you need them can be tricky, especially if you love to rock your falsies daily. The solution? For some, making homemade lash glue is the easiest solution. But is it actually safe? That’s an important question to answer!

Safety of Homemade Glue For Lashes

We know you’re likely here to learn more about making your own eyelash glue recipe. And don’t worry–we’ll be getting to that soon! For now, let’s talk about the safety of such recipes in the first place. After all, you don’t want to end up with irreversible damage done to your eyes do you?

Before you make your own lash glue, you need to consider what ingredients you’ll need. More than anything, it is the ingredients used in homemade lash glue that poses the greatest risk to your eyes and lashes. While putting certain substances not designed to go near your eyes on your eyelid may not seem that dangerous, the opposite is true.

Indeed, putting substances like wood glue, super glue, or yes, even “non-toxic” school glue can cause permanent and irreversible damage to your eyes. You may even go

blind. As you move, sweat, blink, and create tears, those substances on the “top” of your lid can quickly make their way onto your lash line and directly into your eye. This will cause burning, itching, irritation, blurred vision, and yes, possible blindness.

Unfortunately, many homemade glues for fake lashes require that you use school glue on your lids. Don’t believe us? Just search YouTube for scores of dangerous recipes advocating for the use of craft glue on one of the most sensitive and precious parts of your body.

Once you lose your vision, there’s no getting it back. It is for this reason you must be extra cautious about the types of homemade lash glues you try.

Should You Use Homemade Eyelash Glue?

In light of the above safety ramifications of using the wrong ingredients in your eyelash glue, we’re going to say that it isn’t worth taking the risk. If you do make your own eyelash glue, use a recipe that is truly non-toxic and that utilizes no harsh chemicals or glues that wouldn’t typically be used on the eye.

We’ve offered a couple of recipes below that you can use if you’re in a bind. In general, however, we recommend that you only use eyelash glue that is specifically made for applying false eyelashes. This will keep your eyes, eyelashes, and the skin around your eyes irritation free. That is, assuming that you aren’t allergic to chemicals in the eyelash glue in the first place!

Note: Some people seek homemade eyelash glue solutions because they are allergic to the ingredients used in standard lash glue. If this is you, consider using one of the recipes below or look into trying hypoallergenic lash glues instead. If you decide to try recipes other than the ones mentioned here, please, be sure that you aren’t putting chemicals in your eyes. You must refrain from using glues that aren’t designed for use on the eye.

Always use common sense when approaching topics such as this! Your health, wellness, and safety depend on it!

Is Homemade Eyelash Glue Worth It?

Homemade eyelash glue is good for when you’re in a bind, but we don’t recommend you use it all the time.

Yes, it may work well, and yes, it may be cheaper and more convenient. But most natural lash glue recipes will include ingredients not originally intended for the eyes. Even the honey and sugar found in most recipes can have an adverse effect on your eyesight over time.

Thus, we recommend using natural glue for fake eyelashes sparingly.

How to Make Eyelash Glue at Home

If you’re wondering how to make eyelash glue at home without glue, we’ve got you covered. Though many sources will recommend you put Elmer’s school glue in your eyelash recipes, we certainly do not. Try the following recipe instead for making eyelash glue for temporary use.

Note: Remember that you should not, under any circumstances use ANY type of glue not designed for your eyes to glue on false eyelashes. This includes the use of wood glue, super glue, Gorilla glue, Elmer’s glue, and the like.

What You Will Need for DIY Eyelash Adhesive

  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 or 2 drops of raw or organic honey
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • A plastic cup for mixing
  • Cotton bud (aka Q-tip)
  • A spoon (can be a regular metal spoon, plastic, or wooden)
  • An eyelash curler (optional)
  • Mascara
  • False lashes
  • Tweezers
  • A mirror
  • Good lighting

How Do You Make Homemade Eyelash Glue Honey?

  1. Before getting started, go ahead and give your face a wash. Make sure any makeup that may have been on your face and eyes is removed. Prepping the skin on your eyes and face this way will help the lashes adhere more securely.
  2. Next, grab a clean mascara wand or lash comb and comb your lashes through. You may also do this with a wand that has mascara on it before curling your lashes with a lash curler.
  3. Apply any eye makeup you plan to wear now. All makeup applications concerning the eyes should be complete and fully set before attempting to apply your false lashes.
  4. Using the equipment and ingredients specified, combine the sugar, honey, and water together. Mix until the sugar dissolves.
  5. Once the “glue” for false eyelashes has been prepared, remove your falsies from the package. Note: If your false eyelashes seem limp and flat, wrap them around your finger. Then, fluff them from the inner and outer corners to whip them back into shape. This can help revive them after they’ve flattened out from being in the package too long.
  6. Take your cotton swab and dip it into the glue. Then, place a dab of the glue and smear it across the line lash of your false eyelashes. Don’t do too much! Only a little should do. Should you need it to be tackier, try “double gluing” by placing a bit of lash glue along your own lash line as well. Take very special care NOT to get this in your eye. It’s imperative that you only use as much as you actually need.
  7. In a well-lit mirror, affix your pre-glued lashes to your lash line using your tweezers. Hold the lashes in place for at least 30 seconds to ensure they adhere properly. Straighten your lashes as often as you need to.
  8. Once they are securely in place, you can use a lash curler to give them a bit of oomph. Just be sure to do this after the glue has dried. Otherwise, you may pull the lashes back off in the process.

Note: Because this mixture doesn’t contain any preservatives or additives, it may develop bacteria over time. For this reason, we recommend you make this recipe fresh every time you use it. Do not try to store and keep this eyelash glue for future use. Doing so may increase the chances of infection, and thus, could affect your eyesight long-term.

Know that if you’re allergic to honey, other ingredients can be used. For example, you can try using light or dark corn syrup in place of the sugar. You can also try simply mixing sugar with water to apply your lashes.

Homemade Eyelash Glue Without Honey

Looking for an eyelash glue that doesn’t use honey? Then stick around. The following recipe can be used in place of the aforementioned recipe if you are looking for a glue to apply your false lashes with that doesn’t involve honey.

Ingredients

  • Water
  • 1 teaspoon of Vaseline or petroleum jelly
  • 1 capsule of vitamin E oil ( Note: Be sure to break them open and squeeze out the contents)
  • A concealer brush (for application)

DIY Eyelash Glue Recipe: Step-by-Step

  1. Mix together the water and petroleum jelly (Vaseline) in a small bowl. Mix until well incorporated.
  2. Break open your Vitamin E capsules over the bowl. Mix it well. At this point, your glue material should be sticky and syrupy consistency.
  3. Use your concealer brush to apply the glue to the lashes as you would normally. Be sure that if your lashes need revamping that you do so by wrapping them around your finger. Then, fluff the inner and outer corners to ensure they’re as voluminous as you wish them to be.
  4. Once you’ve applied the glue, allow the glue to get tacky. You can do this by allowing the wet glue to sit a few minutes before trying to apply the falsies to your lash line.
  5. Once the glue has become tacky enough, go ahead and apply the lashes to your lash line.
  6. Use a cotton swab to clean up any excess glue from eyelashes with a mild cleanser. Be careful not to get it in your eyes!
  7. That’s it! Applying false eyelashes with your homemade lash glue is now complete!

Other Homemade Lash Glue Recipes For False Lashes

In addition to the previous recipes, consider heating flaxseed with water to make a sticky adhesive for your lashes. Making your own lash glue this way can also help your natural lashes to grow!

Eyelash Glue Alternatives

There are several alternatives that you can use aside from using a homemade glue recipe, or even glue that is store-bought.

Try any of these options instead for equally beautiful lashes. It might even be easier (and cleaner) than applying glue!

  • Pick a magnetic eyeliner and use it with magnetic lashes
  • Try self-adhesive eyelashes
  • Use liquid eyeliner to mimic the effect of thick lashes
  • Look for mascara adhesives
  • Try thick and fluffy eyelash extensions
  • Use a lash glue eyeliner instead of traditional glue
  • Try a volumizing mascara

Can You Make Homemade Eyelash Glue? Yes, But…

Yes, you can make homemade lash glue. But be sure that you’re careful when doing so. Certain ingredients shouldn’t be used on or near the eyes, especially over a prolonged period of time. When possible, always purchase eyelash glue designed specifically for your eyes.

Remember that you only get one pair of eyes in this life. If you run out of eyelash glue and you’re in a pinch, try using one of the recipes listed in this post. However, ideally, you should always use real lash glue as these are specifically designed to be safe for the eyes.

We hope this helps! See you next time!
