FBI Investigates Stepbrother in Florida Teen's Cruise Ship Death - Anna Kepner Case Update (2025)

A tragic mystery unfolds at sea: The FBI is investigating the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard a Carnival cruise ship, and the focus has turned to her stepbrother. This shocking news, reported by CBS News, reveals a complex investigation into a young woman's untimely death during what was meant to be a family vacation.

According to sources, the FBI is looking into the possibility that Kepner's 16-year-old stepbrother, identified in court documents as "T.H.," was involved in her death. The investigation began after Kepner was found dead on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship earlier this month. The ship was returning to Miami after a Caribbean cruise.

Court filings from a custody hearing, obtained by CBS News, indicate that Kepner's family believes T.H. is a suspect. A filing by Kepner's stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, stated, "There is an open investigation regarding [Kepner's] death… and T.H. is a suspect regarding this death which occurred recently on a cruise ship." This filing was in response to a filing by Hudson's ex-husband, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

But here's where it gets controversial... The FBI, however, has not officially named any suspects. They have stated that they do not provide operational updates on their investigations except in rare circumstances.

One law enforcement source has suggested that an altercation might have occurred between the two stepsiblings. Kepner was on vacation with her father, stepmother, and three stepsiblings. Her body was discovered by a housekeeper under the bed in her stateroom, where she was staying with her stepbrother and another stepsibling.

The medical examiner listed the time of death as 11:17 a.m. on November 7, which is around the time her body was discovered. Family members reported that Kepner had told them the night before that she wasn't feeling well and returned to her room. When she didn't appear for breakfast the next morning, a search began.

And this is the part most people miss... Another court filing suggested that charges might be coming against one of Kepner's stepsiblings. This was disclosed in a motion by Shauntel Hudston to reschedule a divorce hearing due to the sensitive nature of the case.

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video from the ship and analyzing electronic swipe card data to determine who entered Kepner's cabin. They are also examining her cellphone records. The FBI and ship security are interviewing passengers, crew members, and Kepner's family.

Carnival Cruise Line has stated that it is cooperating with the federal investigation. The FBI has jurisdiction because Kepner was a U.S. citizen, and the death occurred in international waters. The Miami FBI office is working closely with Carnival security. Carnival also confirmed that the FBI has stated there is no related threat to safety aboard the ship on its current voyage.
