Two significant road projects are making excellent progress, but they're not without their challenges. From this Friday, January 16th, until Sunday, January 18th, Lanyon Drive will be closed to allow for a concrete pour on the new flyover structure. This means a detour through the Hume industrial area for those traveling during this time.
But here's where it gets controversial... For motorists heading from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra, the suggested route is a bit of a mouthful! You'll need to turn right onto Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and then continue onto Canberra Avenue. It's a bit of a detour, but it's necessary for the next phase of construction.
And this is the part most people miss... From Tuesday, January 20th, to Wednesday, January 21st, northbound traffic along the Monaro Highway will be switched to the eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge. This is a big deal, as it will allow road users to experience the new structure for the first time. The upgrade aims to improve safety, freight efficiency, and travel times for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley, and southern NSW.
The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, but there's more to come. Motorists who use Coppins Crossing Road will face a closure between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue on Thursday, February 5th. This is to allow for a concrete pour on the bridge surface, and it's an important step in transforming the Molonglo region.
The construction of the new Molonglo River Bridge and John Gorton Drive will better connect the Molonglo suburbs, including Denman Prospect and Whitlam. It's an exciting development, but it's worth noting that this work was originally scheduled for January 22nd but had to be postponed due to availability issues with plant and concrete pumps.
During the Coppins Crossing Road closures, there will be specific detours in place.
