The Chicago Bears' remarkable turnaround this season is a testament to the power of collective effort and strong leadership. And at the heart of it all is none other than head coach Ben Johnson.
"It all starts with Coach Johnson and his unwavering commitment to the team," says second-year quarterback Caleb Williams. "He's been consistent, and his words have inspired us to believe in ourselves and each other."
Since their rocky start, going 0-2, the Bears have dominated, winning nine out of their last ten games. With a record of 9-3, they're the top seed in the NFC playoff race and are ready to take on their rivals, the Packers, in Green Bay this Sunday.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Williams had a hunch that this season would be special, even back in the spring. "I could feel it as soon as we started training," he recalls. "The guys were dedicated, and the energy was electric. We knew we had something special."
And this is the part most people miss...
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has been a master of strategy, especially with his use of cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. By employing a dime formation with six defensive backs, the Bears' defense has become a force to be reckoned with, generating takeaways and limiting touchdowns.
"Allen's experience shows," says Johnson. "He knows exactly how to utilize our players' strengths. He has a great feel for the game, knowing when to blitz and when to play coverage."
The Bears' success isn't limited to defense alone. On offense, they've dominated the rushing game, ranking second in the NFL with 153.8 yards per game. In fact, they've achieved over 250 yards rushing in two away games this season, a feat unmatched by any other NFL team.
"Being on the road can be challenging, with the crowd noise and all," explains Johnson. "But we've developed a strong run game strategy, and it's paying off."
And let's not forget the spirited rivalry with the Packers. For tight end Cole Kmet, this game is personal. Growing up in the Chicago area, he's experienced the intense rivalry firsthand.
"It's more than just a game," Kmet says. "It's a battle of pride and passion. With family and friends divided between the Bears and Packers, it adds an extra layer of excitement and competition."
