According to reports from CBS and AFP, the incident occurred on November 23, 2025, at the Universal Studios Singapore premiere of the highly anticipated "Wicked: For Good" film. Wen, a 26-year-old, bypassed a barricade and approached Grande, even putting his arm around her. Viral videos captured the shocking moment, but they also highlighted a heroic response.
Grande's co-star, Cynthia Erivo, immediately intervened, stepping between Grande and Wen and physically pushing him away. Security then apprehended Wen, removing him from the scene. The footage shows Erivo and others offering comfort to a visibly shaken Grande. It's a powerful display of solidarity and a stark reminder of the potential dangers celebrities face.
Wen was arrested shortly after and charged with being a public nuisance. Last week, he was sentenced to nine days in jail. Following his sentence, Singaporean authorities deported Wen back to Australia and issued a ban preventing his re-entry into the country, as confirmed in a statement by the city-state's immigration authority and reported by CNA. This action sends a clear message: such behavior will not be tolerated.
But here's where it gets controversial... While some might see the nine-day jail sentence as lenient, considering the potential severity of the situation, Singapore District Judge Christopher Goh viewed Wen's actions as deliberate and attention-seeking. Goh highlighted Wen's alleged history of disrupting other global events, suggesting a pattern of behavior that indicated a high likelihood of future incidents. The judge stated that Wen "showed a pattern of behaviour" which suggested that he will do it again. It's important to note that the maximum penalty for the offense could have been up to three months in jail, a fine of $1,500, or both.
And this is the part most people miss... Even after the incident, Wen's actions continued to raise eyebrows. He posted a video on Instagram, thanking Grande for "letting (him) jump on the Yellow Carpet" with her. This seemingly nonchalant attitude further fueled concerns about his understanding of the gravity of his actions.
Wen did tell the court that he was "wrong" to think his actions would bear no consequences and promised not to repeat the act. Whether this statement reflects genuine remorse or simply an attempt to mitigate the punishment remains a question.
"Wicked: For Good" was released in the United States on Friday and has been a major success, due in no small part to the bond between its stars. Grande and Erivo have publicly displayed a strong friendship throughout the film's press tour. In December 2024, Erivo shared with "CBS Mornings" that she and Grande made a pact early in the production to support and care for each other. This pact clearly extended beyond the screen, as evidenced by Erivo's swift action at the premiere. Erivo recounted, "Before we started shooting, both of us had a conversation about making sure that we would take care of each other and make the space that we needed for each other, and take, you know, give each other what we needed, be generous with each other in this thing, because we knew it was a big undertaking.
