In a recent interview, TESTAMENT's guitarist Alex Skolnick opened up about the competitive spirit that once ignited within the Bay Area thrash scene. But here's where it gets controversial... Skolnick revealed that the only time he felt a true sense of competition was with fellow Bay Area thrashers, EXODUS.
"It was like a team rivalry," Skolnick explained. "They poached our singer, and we thought they were trying to be more like us." But this competitive edge didn't last long. Both bands found their unique sound and identity, and today, they're great friends.
Skolnick also shared insights into the dynamics of working in a two-guitar band like TESTAMENT. He described how he and fellow guitarist Eric Peterson evolved their roles over the years, drawing inspiration from bands like MEGADETH and IRON MAIDEN.
"It's about figuring out what kind of band you are," Skolnick said. "Are you the AC/DC type or more like SCORPIONS, with a rhythm and lead guitarist?"
Skolnick's journey in music is nothing short of remarkable. He joined TESTAMENT at just 16 years old and went on to study jazz at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. His long-running jazz-rock band, ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO, has released six albums, blending influences from Wes Montgomery to BLACK SABBATH and beyond.
