This is the vision realized in the Kitaoka Group's headquarters in Japan, where a stunning 50-meter-long skylight takes center stage. But this isn't just about aesthetics; it's a bold statement on redefining work environments.
Tokyo-based Wataru Architects transformed the 40-year-old building, aiming to enhance its connection with the local landscape and community. The renovation is a testament to their belief in the power of design to influence work culture. Principal Wataru Sato explains, "We wanted to start from the local context and create a space that encourages collaboration and embraces nature." And this is where it gets intriguing... The design team retained the building's steel structure but divided it into two halves, a nod to the nearby Yoshino River valley. This division creates a unique spatial experience, almost like two arms embracing the surrounding environment.
At the heart of the building, an atrium topped with a continuous skylight floods the interior with natural light, symbolizing the connection between the office and the sky above. This feature is not just visually appealing but also serves a practical purpose, as Sato notes, "The atrium brings daylight and fresh air deep into the building, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere." The studio's attention to detail is evident in the interior design, where original tiling meets plywood and neutral finishes, all complemented by red beams and greenery. This carefully curated palette adds depth and warmth to the space.
The ground floor is a welcoming public space, inviting employees and their families, as well as the local community. The entrance, with its cantilevered canopy, and the facade, featuring operable glass sashes, showcase the building's modern update while maintaining a connection to the outdoors. The surrounding landscape has been transformed into a community park, complete with lush vegetation and a unique 3D-printed vase, adding an artistic touch.
Wataru Architects' commitment to sustainability is evident in their approach. By reusing the existing structure and finishes, and maximizing natural light and ventilation, they've reduced the project's environmental footprint. This not only benefits the planet but also enhances the comfort of the workplace, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning.
