Amazon, Flipkart to sell shawls, honey and other Himachal Pradesh products soon


Ecommerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart, and Government e-Marketplace will be able to sell handmade Himachal Pradesh shawls, sweaters, organic honey, rugs, fruits and spices on their web portals.

Himachal Pradesh plans to facilitate the access of 2.80 lakh women belonging to 27,000 self-help groups (SHG) to online platforms so that they can sell their products in a wider market, the minister said. State Rural Development, Virender Kanwar.

The Minister informed that the downloading of SHG products on e-commerce platforms is in progress and will be available under the brand “Him Ira”.

The Minister informed that the product that could be available on e-commerce platforms would be: handmade shawls, sweaters, rugs, organic honey, fruits, dried fruits, spices, pickles, medicinal herbs.

Kanwar said artisans living in remote or snowy areas will be able to showcase their organic, natural and handmade products through Amazon and Flipkart platforms.

He said the government was working on standardization procedures, quality testing and documents. He said the state government will help self-help groups define the branding, packaging and pricing of their products in order to make the market competitive.

Meanwhile, the government has asked the state tourism department to display SHG products in all hotels to inform tourists.

According to the PTI news agency, around 15,000 self-help groups are involved in agricultural activities while 12,000 SHG are in non-agricultural activities as part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission.

Some SHGs sell products in “Him Ira” stores and weekly markets. Currently, 40 “Him Ira” stores are operating in various parts of Himachal Pradesh and the state government plans to open around 100 “Him Ira” stores in all districts of the state.

A woman member of a self-help group earns around ??200-300 per day and the state government provides ??50,000 to each SHG to start livelihood activities.

The Center provided an interest subsidy on loans of up to ??3 lakh to self-help groups. In addition, the Himachal Pradesh government has also decided to provide an additional interest subsidy to self-help groups, who wish to take out loans up to ??5 lakh, the minister said.
